About The Phillips Collection

Duncan Phillips and his brother, Jim Phillips, convinced their parents to provide them $10,000 each year to collect American art for the family. After a series of tragedies, Duncan Phillips founded the Phillips Memorial Art Gallery (later renamed the Philips Collection) in 1918 using a room in their home to display artwork.

Understandably, as the collection grew their shared home was not an ideal location to showcase the works. In the 1930s the family moved out of the home and gave it over to the museum, where the Phillips Collection still stands.

The museum now contains nearly 6,000 works of art, including 2 works of art by Thomas Hart Benton: Moonlight on the Osage (1938) and The Corral (1948).
