The Smithsonian Institution’s National Portrait Gallery has the unique mission of telling the story of America via portraits of Americans, the people who have helped shape the country and its culture. The National Portrait Gallery now contains over 26,000 works of art, including commissioned portraits of Presidents.

Thomas Hart Benton Artwork at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Portrait Gallery

Their collection also includes 11 works of art by Thomas Hart Benton (and two letters), including Self-Portrait with Rita (circa 1924). This painting has the unique provenance of being stolen from the Benton garage before finding its way to the National Portrait Gallery.
